Wrinkles Around the Eyes: The Most Common Types and How to Treat Them

Periocular wrinkles are the lines and folds that form around the eyes, including the upper and lower eyelids. These wrinkles can be caused by various factors such as aging, sun exposure, and facial expressions. Here's a breakdown of the common types of wrinkles and their respective treatments:

  • Excessive Eyelid Skin (Dermatochalasis)

    • Description: This occurs when the skin of the upper or lower eyelids becomes loose and redundant, forming folds.

    • Treatment: Surgical excision (blepharoplasty) is often needed to remove the excess skin. [LEARN MORE]

  • Static Wrinkles

    • Description: Wrinkles that remain visible even when the face is at rest, often caused by sun damage or skin aging.

    • Treatment: Laser resurfacing is effective for reducing the appearance of these wrinkles by stimulating collagen production and tightening the skin. [LEARN MORE]

  • Dynamic Wrinkles/Expression Lines

    • Description: These wrinkles appear with facial movement, such as smiling or squinting, and are caused by muscle activity.

    • Treatment: Botulinum toxin injections (e.g., Botox) are used to relax the muscles responsible for these wrinkles, smoothing out the skin. [LEARN MORE]

  • Gravitational Folds

    • Description: Over time, gravity causes sagging of the brow (brow ptosis) and lateral hooding, where the outer part of the upper eyelid droops.

    • Treatment: A brow lift may be required to lift the sagging skin and improve the overall appearance.

Why Multiple Treatment Modalities Are Needed

It's important to recognize that different types of periocular wrinkles require different treatment approaches. Surgery alone cannot address all types of wrinkles. For example, blepharoplasty can remove excess skin but won't improve dynamic wrinkles, which are best treated with botulinum toxin injections. Similarly, laser resurfacing may smooth static wrinkles but won't correct gravitational sagging.

A personalized, multi-modal approach is often the most effective way to rejuvenate the eyelid area.
